Every so often in the course of life, ordinary people discover God at work. This possibility gives courage in the face of uncertainty, strength in moments of exhaustion, and comfort in times of trouble. In the book of Ruth, the work of God is discovered—truly—but not in lightning flashes or in rumbly thunder as upon Sinai. Neither does it beckon from a cool garden path as did a voice in Eden.
